What, Why and How

Servicing air source heat pumps (ASHPs) involves annual professional checks for efficiency and safety, covering electricals, pipework, and component wear, plus basic user tasks like cleaning filters and keeping the outdoor unit clear. A qualified engineer inspects coils, refrigerant levels, and settings, while homeowners should regularly clear obstructions and maintain filters to prevent issues, ensure warranty compliance, and maximize lifespan.

Professional Servicing (Annual)

  • Component Inspection:

Checking fan bearings, heat exchangers, expansion vessels, valves, and internal/outdoor coils for dirt and wear.

  • Performance Checks:

Measuring airflow, refrigerant levels, system pressure, delta T, and verifying correct flow rates and settings.

  • Fluid & Filter Maintenance:

Cleaning or replacing filters, cleaning the magnetic filter, and checking antifreeze (glycol) levels if applicable.

  • Controls & Wiring:

Testing thermostats, remote controls, and checking electrical wiring for damage, notes VIVA Training and Vaillant.

  • Full System Audit

Visual & diagnostic checks, pressure testing, electrical circuit tests, and leak checks on pipework.

User Maintenance (Monthly/Regular)

  • Clear Obstructions:

Keep the outdoor unit free from leaves, snow, bushes (at least 5 feet away) for adequate airflow, says VIVA Training.

  • Clean Filters:

Regularly clean or replace air filters for optimal performance, notes Elephant Energy.

  • Inspect Coils & Drainage:

Visually check and gently clean the outdoor unit's fins and ensure the drainage system is clear, says Elephant Energy.

Why it's Important

  • Efficiency & Cost: Prevents energy loss and keeps running costs down.

  • Longevity: Extends the unit's lifespan, notes Elephant Energy, like a car.

  • Warranty: Often required to maintain the manufacturer's warranty.

  • Reliability: Catches small issues before they become costly breakdowns, notes Daikin and VIVA Training.
