Air To Air Heat Pumps (A2A)
Air to air (A2) systems for residential and light commercial use range from simple room-specific units to complex whole-building systems. While primarily for cooling, modern "reverse-cycle" systems provide highly efficient heating and can even integrate with hot water cylinders to provide domestic hot water.

1. System Types & Design
Design choices depend on the number of zones, aesthetic requirements, and whether the building has existing ductwork.

2. Integration with Hot Water Cylinders
Modern air to air can be connected to your domestic hot water supply in two primary ways:
-
Heat Recovery Units (Retrofit): A heat exchanger is installed on the refrigerant line between the compressor and condenser. It captures "waste heat" that would normally be exhausted outside and diverts it to pre-heat water in your existing cylinder. This can provide "free" hot water while the cooling is running.
-
Integrated Multi-Systems (All-in-One): Manufacturers like Daikin offer systems (e.g., the Multi+) that connect standard wall-mounted AC units and a dedicated domestic hot water tank to the same outdoor unit. This single system handles all cooling, heating, and hot water needs.

3. Estimated Costs (UK 2026)
The following estimates include equipment and professional installation by an F-Gas certified engineer.
-
Single Room (Split): £550 – £2,100 installed.
-
Multi-Room (2-3 Rooms): £3,500 – £7,000+ depending on the complexity of the pipe runs.
-
Ducted System: £3,000 – £15,000+ for whole-home solutions.
-
Hot Water Integration: Adding a dedicated domestic hot water tank to a multi-split setup typically adds £1,500 – £2,500 to the base system cost.

4. Key Options & Considerations
-
Indoor Unit Styles: Beyond standard wall-mounted units, you can opt for floor-standing units (similar to radiators) or ceiling cassettes (common in commercial spaces).
-
Smart Controls: Most modern systems integrate with Wi-Fi for control via smartphone apps or voice assistants like Alexa and Google Home.
-
Winter Heating: These systems are essentially air-to-air heat pumps; they are roughly 3-4 times more efficient than electric heaters when used for winter warming.
